⚡ WHAT'S ACTUALLY INVOLVED?

What Does an EV Charger Installation Include?

A proper home EV charger installation is more than mounting a charger on the wall. The electrical setup needs to be planned around your home's panel capacity, wiring route, charger location and the charging equipment being installed.

HOME EV CHARGING Installation Overview
SYSTEM CHECK
01

Electrical Panel & Capacity Assessment

We review the electrical service, panel and existing loads to understand how much capacity may be available for EV charging.

02

Dedicated EV Charging Circuit

The charger typically requires a dedicated electrical circuit sized around the charging equipment and the home's electrical setup.

03

Wiring Route From Panel to Charger

We plan the route from the electrical panel to the charging location, considering distance, access, finished areas, garage layout and exterior routing where required.

04

Charger Location & Mounting

The charger is positioned around the parking location, charging cable reach and the electrical installation needed for the property.

05

Inspection & Final Verification

Where applicable, we coordinate the required ESA notification and inspection and verify the completed charging installation.

EVERY HOME IS DIFFERENT

The Right Setup Depends on Your Home

The final EV charging setup can depend on more than the charger itself. We look at the electrical system and property before recommending what work is actually required.

INSTALLATION FACTORS ASSESS FIRST
PANEL Capacity
DISTANCE Wire Run
CHARGER Equipment
LOCATION Garage / Outdoor
IMPORTANT A panel upgrade is not automatically required.

Depending on the home's electrical demand, the solution may be a standard dedicated circuit, EV load management or an electrical service upgrade.

⚡ ELECTRICAL CAPACITY MATTERS

Can Your Electrical Panel Handle an EV Charger?

Before installing a home EV charger, one of the first things to check is whether your electrical system has enough available capacity. The answer depends on your service size, existing household loads, charger requirements and how the home is currently using electricity.

Service size alone does not determine the final EV charging solution.
01 Existing Loads

Heating, cooling, cooking, dryers, hot tubs and other large loads all affect available electrical capacity.

02 Charger Demand

Different chargers and charging configurations can place different demands on the electrical system.

03 Service Size

The home's electrical service and panel are reviewed as part of the overall installation assessment.

04 Load Management

In some homes, load management may provide another option when available electrical capacity is limited.

THREE COMMON OUTCOMES

What Happens After We Check the Panel?

01

Existing Capacity Is Available

If the home has enough available capacity, the EV charger may be installed using a properly sized dedicated charging circuit.

STANDARD INSTALLATION
03

Service Upgrade Is Recommended

In some situations, upgrading the electrical service may make the most sense, especially when the home already has significant demand or future electrical additions are planned.

HAVE A 100 AMP PANEL?

You May Still Have EV Charging Options.

Many Mississauga homes still have 100 amp electrical services. Whether an EV charger can be added depends on the actual electrical demand of the home, not just the number printed on the main breaker.

⚡ HOME CHARGING SETUPS

Home EV Charger Installation Options

The best home EV charging setup depends on your vehicle, charger, electrical panel, parking location and how quickly you want to charge. JAC Electric helps Mississauga homeowners choose an installation that fits both the property and the electrical system.

03 HARDWIRED

Hardwired EV Charger Installation

Some home chargers are connected directly to the electrical circuit rather than using a receptacle. The correct setup depends on the charger manufacturer's requirements and the electrical installation.

04 RECEPTACLE

EV Charger Receptacle Installation

Certain charging setups use an electrical receptacle instead of a hardwired connection. The receptacle, circuit and installation still need to be suitable for the charging equipment being used.

CHARGER LOCATION

Garage or Outdoor EV Charger Installation

EV chargers can often be installed inside a garage or in an outdoor location. The final placement depends on parking position, cable reach, weather exposure, the wiring route and the charging equipment being installed.

01 Garage Installation

A common setup when the electrical panel and vehicle parking area are accessible from inside the home or garage.

02 Outdoor Installation

Exterior installations may require different routing, mounting and weather considerations depending on the property.

03 Longer Wiring Runs

When the charger is far from the electrical panel, the route and distance can affect the material, labour and overall installation.

WHAT AFFECTS THE PRICE?

6 Factors That Can Change EV Charger Installation Cost

01

Distance From the Electrical Panel

Longer runs generally require more wiring, materials and labour than a charger installed close to the electrical panel.

02

Electrical Panel Capacity

The existing electrical demand needs to be considered to determine whether the home can support the proposed charging setup.

03

Wiring Route & Accessibility

Finished ceilings, basements, exterior walls and difficult routes can make an installation more involved than an open and accessible path.

04

Charger & Charging Setup

The charging equipment and proposed configuration affect the electrical circuit and installation requirements.

05

Load Management

Homes with limited available electrical capacity may require an EV load-management solution as part of the installation.

06

Panel or Service Upgrades

If additional electrical capacity is required, panel or service work can increase the overall scope and cost of the project.

⚡ EV CHARGER FAQ

EV Charger Installation Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about installing an EV charger at home? Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from homeowners in Mississauga and the GTA.

01 Can I install an EV charger on a 100 amp electrical service? +

Possibly. Having a 100 amp service does not automatically mean you need to upgrade to 200 amps. The important factor is how much electrical capacity is available after considering the existing loads in your home and the charging equipment you want to install.

Depending on the electrical demand, your home may be able to support a dedicated EV circuit, or an EV load-management solution may be an option.

02 Do I need a 200 amp panel for an EV charger? +

Not necessarily. Some homes already have enough available electrical capacity for EV charging without upgrading the service. Other homes may benefit from load management, while certain electrical systems may require additional panel or service work.

We assess the electrical system before recommending the most appropriate setup.

03 Can you install Tesla Wall Connectors? +

Yes. JAC Electric installs Tesla Wall Connectors and other residential EV charging equipment. The installation is planned around the charger requirements, your electrical panel, available capacity and the location where you park your vehicle.

Learn about Tesla charger installation →
04 Can an EV charger be installed outside? +

Outdoor EV charger installations are possible when the charging equipment and electrical installation are appropriate for the location. The wiring route, mounting location and exposure to outdoor conditions all need to be considered during the installation.

05 Is a hardwired EV charger better than an EV charger outlet? +

Both configurations can be used for home EV charging depending on the charger, vehicle and electrical setup. A hardwired charger is connected directly to the dedicated electrical circuit, while some charging equipment is designed to connect through an appropriate receptacle.

The best option depends on the charging equipment you are using and how you want the charger installed.

06 What affects the cost of EV charger installation? +

EV charger installation cost can vary based on the distance from the electrical panel to the charger, the wiring route, charger requirements, available panel capacity and whether additional electrical work such as load management or service upgrades is required.

Sending us photos of the panel and proposed charger location can help us understand the scope of the installation.

07 Do EV charger installations require an ESA inspection? +

Depending on the electrical work being completed, an ESA notification and inspection may be required. Where applicable, JAC Electric coordinates the notification and inspection process for the completed installation.

08 What information should I send for an EV charger quote? +

It helps to send the charger model you plan to install, a clear photo of your electrical panel, the location where the vehicle will be parked and an approximate idea of the distance between the panel and charger location.
