DO YOU ACTUALLY NEED A PANEL UPGRADE?

How Do You Know If Your Electrical Panel Needs Attention?

Not every older electrical panel needs the exact same solution. Some homes need more electrical capacity, while others may only need the existing panel replaced or assessed.

01
You're Running Out of Breaker Space

A full or crowded panel can make future electrical work, renovations or new circuits more difficult.

02
Your Home Still Has a Fuse Panel

Older fuse panels may lead homeowners to consider replacing the panel with a modern breaker setup.

03
You Have an Older Panel Brand

If you have an older panel such as Federal Pioneer, it may be worth having the existing equipment professionally assessed.

04
You're Adding Major Electrical Loads

EV charging, renovations, electric appliances and other new loads can change how much electrical capacity your home needs.

05
Your Current Service Is 100 or 125 Amps

Depending on the home's electrical demand, moving to a higher capacity service may be worth considering.

06
Someone Recommended an Assessment

A renovation, home inspection, electrical issue or insurance conversation may lead you to have the panel reviewed.

03
Complete the Electrical Work

The existing equipment is replaced or upgraded and the new panel and service components are installed.

04
Finish the Upgrade

Final connections, required coordination and inspection steps are completed so the new electrical setup is ready for the home.

PANEL UPGRADE PRICING

How Much Does an Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost?

Every home is different. A simple panel and service upgrade can be very straightforward, while other homes require additional equipment, disconnects, trenching or more involved electrical work.

TYPICAL STARTING POINT
STARTING AROUND $2,500 + For a very basic back-to-back panel/service upgrade.
BASIC PROJECT $2,500+
MORE INVOLVED $5,000+
Simple back-to-back Complex service work
!

$2,500 is not a flat price for every home. It represents a very basic installation where the existing setup allows for a straightforward back-to-back upgrade.

WHY DOES THE PRICE CHANGE?

Some Upgrades Are Simple. Others Require More Work.

01
Back-to-Back Installation

The simplest projects are generally where the new service equipment can be installed close to the existing panel location with minimal additional routing.

02
Disconnect Requirements

Additional disconnect equipment or service changes can increase the amount of material and labour required.

03
Trenching

If electrical service work requires trenching or underground routing, the project becomes more involved than a standard back-to-back installation.

04
Underground Service

Underground electrical services can require a different scope of work and equipment compared with a straightforward overhead service upgrade.

05
Service Equipment

Meter equipment, conductors, breakers, panel equipment and other service components vary depending on the home.

06
Existing Site Conditions

Panel location, access, routing and the existing electrical setup can all affect the final amount of work required.

PANEL UPGRADE FAQ

Electrical Panel Upgrade Questions Answered.

Here are some of the most common questions homeowners ask us about electrical panel upgrades, replacements and service upgrades in Mississauga and the GTA.

01 How much does an electrical panel upgrade cost in Mississauga? +

A very basic back-to-back electrical panel and service upgrade can start around $2,500. More involved projects can reach $5,000+ depending on the existing service, equipment required, disconnects, trenching, underground work and site conditions.

The best way to get an accurate price is to have us look at your actual panel and service setup.

02 Do I need to upgrade from 100 amps to 200 amps? +

Not every 100 amp home automatically needs a 200 amp service. It depends on the electrical loads in the home, the condition of the existing equipment and what you are planning to add.

If you are considering an EV charger, electric heating, additional appliances, renovations or other large electrical loads, it may be worth having the existing service assessed.

03 Can you replace a Federal Pioneer electrical panel? +

Yes. We can assess an existing Federal Pioneer panel and explain the practical replacement or upgrade options for the home.

Some homeowners contact us after an insurer, home inspection, electrician or another professional raises questions about their existing panel. That does not mean every Federal Pioneer panel requires the exact same solution, so we recommend assessing the actual installation first.

04 Can an old fuse panel be replaced with a breaker panel? +

Yes. Older fuse panels can often be replaced with a modern breaker panel. The exact work depends on the existing service, wiring and condition of the electrical installation.

A fuse-panel replacement does not always mean the entire home needs a larger electrical service, which is why the existing setup should be assessed first.

05 What is the difference between a panel replacement and a service upgrade? +

A panel replacement generally means replacing the electrical panel while keeping the existing service capacity where appropriate.

A service upgrade increases the electrical capacity available to the home, such as moving from a 100 amp service to a 200 amp service. That can involve additional service equipment and electrical work beyond simply changing the panel.

06 Does installing an EV charger mean I need a 200 amp panel? +

Not necessarily. Some homes can support an EV charger using their existing electrical service, while others may need load management or additional service capacity.

We look at the existing panel and electrical demand before recommending a full service upgrade.

Learn About EV Charger Installation →
07 What can make a panel upgrade more expensive? +

More involved service upgrades can cost more when the project requires additional disconnects, trenching, underground service work, service equipment, longer routing or more complicated site conditions.

This is why a simple back-to-back installation may start around $2,500 while more involved projects can exceed $5,000.

08 Do you install 400 amp electrical services? +

We can assess higher-capacity electrical service projects, including homes that may require significantly more electrical capacity than a typical 100 or 200 amp service.

A 400 amp service is a much more involved project and should be based on the actual electrical requirements of the property rather than assumed from one appliance or upgrade alone.

09 How do I know what size electrical service my home has? +

The main breaker and existing service equipment can provide clues about the electrical service size, but the full setup should be reviewed before planning an upgrade.

If you are unsure, send us clear photos of the panel, main breaker and meter/service area and we can help you determine the next step.

10 Do you provide electrical panel upgrades in Mississauga? +

Yes. JAC Electric provides residential electrical panel upgrades, panel replacements and related electrical service work in Mississauga and throughout the GTA.

If you are not sure whether you need a panel replacement, a 100-to-200 amp service upgrade or another solution, contact us and we can look at the existing setup with you.
